William Henry (Bill) Cosby Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pa July 12, 1937, the oldest of four boys, to parents Anna Pearl and William Henry Cosby Sr. He was the school’s class clown who also had a full sports schedule and worked before and after school. He left school in his junior year to join the navy. He later received his GED and won a track scholarship to the Philadelphia Temple University. He left college after two years and tended bar while doing stand-up comedy gigs. It was at one of these performances in Washington, DC where he met his wife, Camille Olivia Hanks. They married January 25, 1964 and became the proud parents of daughters Erika, Erinn, Ensa, Evin and son Ennis who was killed in 1997.
Upon pursuing his comedic career, he appeared on the Tonight Show in 1963. This led to his first comedy album being produced by Warner Brothers in 1964. In 1965 he was cast as a lead actor in the television series I Spy with Robert Culp. Bill Cosby was the first African-American to star in a dramatic series and won three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series. He hosted Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids from 1972-1979. He was also cast in twenty-two films from 1969-2004, wrote twelve books, and was awarded fifteen honorary degrees from various universities. The highlight of his career was the debut of The Cosby Show in September 1984 which he starred and produced. The series ended in 1992. He went on to host Kids Say Darndest the Things from 1998-2000.
